MARY JOHNSTONE his wife, born Aug.1824 died June 1869. The Revd. THOMAS NINIAN DRUMMOND their son, for nine years Minister of Saltoun parish died Aug. 1885 aged 32. HELEN JOHNSTONE their daughter born Nov.1851 died Feb.1885. ROBERT SAMUEL JOHNSTONE their son born May 1855 died Feb.1906. MARY EUPHEMIA their daughter born Feb.1859 died Oct 1928. 72 Wood. "Here lyeth THOMAS WOOD [the next two lines are illegible] who died Octr [perhaps 7] [in the year] 1766 [1766 is a "most probable" reading]. Also [forename illegible] DUNCAN his spouse who died July the 29 1795 [the 95 is a "most probable" reading] aged 89 years [the 89 is a "most probable" reading]. Also WILLIAM WOOD their son [who was] taylr [sic] in Bolton, who died 10 June [the 10 is a "most probable" reading] 1812......" [The remaining inscription on this fallen and broken stone is worn to illegibility]
73 Baillie/Foggo. "Erected to the memory of WILLIAM BAILLIE, Bolton, died 2 July 1871. CHRISTINA BOGUE FOGGO his wife died 28 March 1896. Also of CHRISTINA their daughter died at Edinburgh 13 Nov. 1898 [1893?]. And their son JAMES, died at Gifford 21 August 1898, for 39 years Smith at Bolton. JANE BAILLIE died at Gifford 28 November 1922. until the Day break and the Shadows flee away."
74 Wyllie/Turner. In memory of ALEXANDER WYLLIE farmer in Bolton. Born 27 Mar 1812; died 24 July 1887. And JANET TURNER his wife, born 15 Mar 1815, died 15 Jan 1895. Having served their own generation/By the will of God they fell asleep. [And lower down, on the base of the plinth "Five sons and three daughters unite in erecting this memorial to the memory of their beloved parents."

117 Broun Lindsay. [This is a black polished granite octagonal headstone, with armorial bearings etc.] "In memory of COLIN GEORGE BROUN LINDSAY of Colstoun. Born Nov.4 1926, died April 11 1989."
118 Baird .[An old table-stone to which the following inscription has been added by fixing a polished grey granite tablet to the old stone. In addition to the English text on the granite slab there are two latin inscriptions on the old stone, which MAY relate to the Baird or Broun or Lindsay families. These read: "Endure fort" and "Astra Castra Numen Lumen Munimen". No doubt family mottoes.] The text itself reads: "In loving memory of Major SIR HUMPHREY BROUN LINDSAY D.S.O. of Colstoun. Kings Own Borderers. Born Oct.23rd 1888, died June 23 1964. And LADY EDITH CHRISTIAN BROUN BAIRD Born June 13 1893, died April 4 1981. 'The fruit of the spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Faith'"

124 Moffat/Kinghorn. "Erected by ALEXR. KINGHORN to the memory of HANNAH MOFFAT his spouse, who died the 27th September 1854 aged 46 years".
125 Kinghorn/Hanning. "Sacred to the memory of ROBERT KINGHORN who died at Dunse [now spelt Duns] on the 14th December 1864 aged 55 years and is interred here. He was much loved in life and regretted in death. Also JANE HANNING his wife who died 10 January 1845 aged 38 years".
126 Kinghorn/Black. "Here lyes the body of ANN BLACK spouse to DAVID KINGHORN who died the ?? Nov 1793 [the 3 is a best guess] aged 67. Also DAVID KINGHORN there [sic] son who died the ?? May ???? aged ?? years. Likewise two of [their] children who died ......" [the remainder is worn into total illegibility]. Note that in Pencaitland churchyard there is one stone (still readable) to "Kinghorn". This is E7 which reads: "In memory of GEORGE KINGHORNE who was a faithful servant at Winton for nearly forty years and died on the 10th of May 1871 aged 72. This stone is erected by Lady Ruthven as a testimony of her regard for him. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
127 Wright/Stag. [On one side] "Here lyes JAMES WRIGH[T] and ISO[BEL] STAG his spouse 176[1?]." [On second side] "Heer lyes JAMES WRIGHT died March .." [The remainder is damaged and illegible].
128 Stephenson/Wright. "Erected to the memory of ADAM STEPHENSON who died in Haddington 22 August 1857. Also ELIZABETH WRIGHT his wife who died on the 13 of May 1847. Also two of their daughters HELEN who died 17 July 1889 aged 66 and LEAH who died 6 January 1898 aged 73."
129 McLauchlan/Spence. "In memory of JANET McLAUCHLAN who departed this life 6 March 1886 aged 65 years. Also WILLIAM SPENCE her husband who died 7 Octr. 1898 aged 82 years. Also CHARLES his son, died 10 April 1891 aged 52 years. Not lost but gone before".
130 No text is readable. The initials "GS" [probably] can be read.
131 Cairns. [This is a very old grey granite flat tombstone between two yew trees. A sketch of it appears at the top of the "Bolton Inscriptions" page. It is very difficult to read.] "16xx H[er]e [lyes] [W]ILLIAM [CA]IRNS Of Pilmoor (sic) who Departed this Lyfe the xx [M]ay 1688, 53 [83?] aetatis. [Also initials "WC" and "AB". the inscription on the surround reads: The fear of the Lord is the fontain (sic) of Wisdom and the Way to Al Hapines (sic) who soever walkit thairin sal obtein Lyf everlasting. Proberbs" [Note that Pilmuir House was built in 1624. Over the moulded doorway on the front of the stair tower is a dated stone panel which bears the initials of William Cairns and his wife. 133 Lidgate The stone is grey sandstone, ht.110cm x br.70cm The legend reads: "In loving memory of JAMES DUNCAN who died at Amisfield Garden, 23 August 1892 aged 74 years. MARGARET DIPPIE his wife, died 26 May 1902 aged 79 years. ELIZABETH LIDGATE their eldest daughter who died 18 Jany. 1914 aged 65 years. Also JANE DIPPIE WHITE died 5 October 1932. Also AGNES and ANNIE, twin daughters who died in infancy."

137 Stuart/Tomlinson. (A white marble tablet set into the exterior wall of the Stuart vault) "Here rest remains of LOUISA wife of the RIGHT REVEREND GEORGE TOMLINSON DD, Lord Bishop of Gibraltar. Eldest daughter of LT.GEN. THE HONBLE. SIR PATRICK STUART of Eaglescairnie. Born 15 Oct 1815 - Died 15 Sept 1850. [1850 is a best guess].
138 Stuart. "Here rests the body of the HONLE. CHARLES FRANCIS STUART, Fourth and Youngest son of ALEXANDER 10th LORD BLANTYRE. Born 25 October 1780, died at Eaglescairnie 2 December 1858."
139 Rodney. "THOMAS MAITLAND RODNEY, Captain Royal Navy. Born 14 October 1810, died 18 July 1872. Them also which sleep in Jesus/ Will God bring with Him. Also ELIZABETH FRANCES his wife, died 27 October 1886."
140 Stuart. "EMILY HENRIETTA daughter of General the Honble. SIR PATRICK STUART. Born June 6 1828. Died Jany.16 1918. Thy Word was unto me the joy and rejoicing/ Of Mine Heart. Jer.XV.16."
141 Stuart. "GEORGE STUART, son of Gen.The Honble. SIR PATRICK STUART. Born 21 June 1825, died 5 Sept. 1898. He asked Life of Thee and Thou gavest it him/ Even length of days for ever and ever."
142 Stuart/Rodney. "The Honble. SIR PATRICK STUART GCMG of Eaglescairnie; General in the Army, son of ALEXANDER 10th LORD BLANTYRE, born 10 June 1777, died 7 February 1855. CATHERINE HENRIETTA his wife, daughter of the HON. JOHN RODNEY, born 17 April 1791, died 17 April 1870. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
143 Stuart. "ELIZABETH FREDERICA, wife of ALEXANDER CHARLES STUART of Eaglescairnie. Born 30 June 1828. Died 19 October 1890. 'With Christ which is far better'". It goes on to add "ALEXANDER CHARLES STUART of Eaglescairnie. Born 29 April 1814. Died 25 November 1897. 'Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners'"
144 Lindesay/Haleburton "PARTICK LINDESAY Esq. of Eaglescairnie died 29 [month unreadable] aged 80 [?]. MARGARET his wife, daughter and heritor of THOS. HALEBURTON Esq. of Eaglescairnie died Aug 20 [year unreadable] aged 90. Also JANE LINDESAY their daughter died Sept 14 1821, aged 63." [We've given this text our best shot, but it is very difficult to read.]

M1 ROBERT WALTER [STUART] 11th Lord Blantyre Major General in the Army, served in Holland, and in the Peninsular War. Born 26 December 1775, Accidentally killed in Brussels during the revolution on the 23rd September 1830, aged 54. His remains were brought from Brussels and laid here.

This tablet is placed in loving memory by his wife, FANNY MARY, daughter of the HON. JOHN RODNEY, born 26 July 1792, died 19 November 1875.

M2 HON. WALTER STUART, Master of Blantyre; only son of CHARLES 11th Lord Blantyre. Born 17 July 1851, died 15 March 1895.

MARGARET, wife of ROBERT 7th Lord Blantyre, daughter of HON.WILLIAM HAY of Drummelzier, died 13 December 1782, aged 84.
also their daughters, HON MARION STUART, died 27 November 1780 aged 45. HON. MARGARET STUART, died 4 June 1794 aged 62.

M3 HON. JAMES STUART, Lieut Colonel in the Army, Major in the Rifle Brigade in which regiment he served with distinction throughout the Crimean War. Born 28 July 1827, died 11 April 1870.

HON. WALTER RODNEY STUART. Born 16 July 1826, Died 13 September 1838.

HON. HENRY STUART, born 30 June 1830, died 13 April 1842.

[Inside the church, a series of plaques and inscriptions may be seen, as below]

Stuart/Baird/Gladstone. "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of CHARLES STUART 12th LORD BLANTYRE who was laid to rest beside this church December 1900, and of EVELYN, LADY BLANTYRE, who died and was buried at Nice, 1869." [This text is below a stained glass window. A brass plaque adjacent reads "This window is presented to Bolton church in loving remembrance by their daughters ELLEN BAIRD and GERTRUDE GLADSTONE, 1906.]

Baird "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of JOHN GEORGE ALEXANDER BAIRD of Colstoun and Wellwood; formerly of the 16th Lancers and Colonel of the Ayrshire Yeomanry. Member of Parliament for the Central Division of Glasgow from 1886 to 1906. An Elder in the Church of Scotland for 21 years. Born May 31 1854, died April 6 1917.Beloved by all. This stone was placed by his wife and his two daughters. Thou wilt show me the Path of Life/ Not by might, not by power/ but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts" [On a plaque mounted on the church interior wall.]
